So ... you have the book written - check!
You have the whole thing edited - check!
You have it all proofread - check!
You picked the right size for everything - check!
You feel good about the whole thing - check!
And now ... you are ready to make it look good.
You are at the epic moment to design your cover. Now, if you're anything like me, you'll have been idea'ing and vision'ing this right from the start, and thats a good thing. What vibe your book is giving off, what colours you see, what images, is it a drawing, your face, a picture, an illustration ... there are no limits on what the cover could be so ... think big and go wild.
Remember, its got to catch peoples eye so don't be shy and retiring when it comes to your cover.
Where do you get your cover made?
Well, you can make it yourself on Canva, or in Adobe or whatever cool creative platform you like to use, but ... if it feels outside your scope then get someone to do it for you. You can have someone do the drawing for your cover and then give it to a cover designer to turn into a cover, you can get a cover designer to do the whole process, and the costs range from 40 dollars to hundreds depending on what you're looking for.
If you go back through these articles and look at the tips, you will see one where I give details of a cover designer I use and she is wonderful.
Have fun with this part, you might have multiple samples of what you'd like, and just trust that you will know what the right one is when you see it. It will jump off the page at you and tell you to pick it!
I have created a number of my own covers, and I'm no designer, and absolutely loved the whole process of doing it. And then, I got a designer to do some of them and I just sent her pictures I loved and the idea I had for the covers and she created it from there. There is a lot of back and forth as your designer creates your vision, sometimes the designer won't get it right, that's ok, this is a process so just trust it and keep asking questions, ask for revisions, and be really clear with what you like and don't like. Communication is key and you're the one who needs to be delighted with it in the end.
One of my covers took AGES to get right and it was totally worth the time it took because the finished result is BRILLIANT. I've not published that book yet though and I'm not sure I will in the traditional sense because I think it wants to be something different. More on that later.
So, off you go ... get creative, get thinking, and get that cover done.
