I snorted laughing when I wrote this because ... the boldness in me couldn't help it! SIZE MATTERS!
I was cooking with my son the last night and told him how annoyed it made me when I buy a book and the font is waaaayyyyy to small for me to read. My annoyance levels skyrocket and I just feel cheated. Yes, that is a big reaction for something seemingly insignificant but IT IS SIGNIFICANT DAMMIT ...!!
I love to read. I read every day, sometimes a book a day, so I want to be ABLE to read the blasted thing!
But ... authors live by the rule of 10 or 11 ... sized font ... and that just doesn't cut it for me.
No ... I am not blind thank you very much, and yes ... maybe I do need to go to specsavers but I haven't yet so here we are!
I like a good size 14 ... font ... and I dare the rule makers to tell me I can't do it my way. I break rules for breakfast!
So, SIZE MATTERS ... in terms of font.
Who are your audience? Are they youthful whipper snappers who's eyesight is 20/20? Are they middle age women who's eyesight requires them to hold the phone at arms length doing a little tango with whatever object they are peering at? Or somewhere in between?
It matters that you know your readers well enough to know what they need from you as well as a great book. So ... give it to them.
Also, what kind of spacing works best for the kind of book you're writing? Be willing to play around with your manuscript until you get it the way you ... and your readers ... want it!
And then there is the size of the book itself! Do you want it to be a giant tomb that your readers have to schlep around with them in a duffle bag? Or do you want it to be a nice neat and tidy thing that fits in a handbag and can be taken everywhere with ease? Have a look at the different size books on your own shelf and consider what you prefer to hold in your hand in all kinds of situations. Lying sideways in bed, sitting on a bus, hiding behind that folder of spreadsheets you're supposed to be sorting in work! What works best?
I love a 5 by 8 myself.
